What is Prayer?

Prayer is dialogue with God. Prayer is talking with God. It is called dialogue because it is a two-way conversation and involves you not only talking, [which is monologue], but also listening and then obeying His words to you.

We get to know God by spending time with Him. Just as a husband gets to know His wife better each year of marriage, so too, as we spend time with God we get to know Him better and better and our understanding of His character and ways deepen.

His voice becomes more familiar and we respond to Him as He speaks with us on a daily basis.

Jesus said in Luke 18:1 "Men should always pray and not faint!"

Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 "Always keep on praying."

We can talk to God about everything. He is always within call, and His ear is open to our prayer, as a mother listens to her baby.

We should pray in faith! When we pray it must be in faith, believing God will hear our prayer and that He will answer.

Jesus said in Mark 11:24 "Listen to me! You can pray for anything, and if you believe you have it! It's yours!"

Prayer is a powerful force that can change governments, circumstances, situations and the things that are against us can be changed! God shapes the world by our prayers.

Jeremiah 33:3 "Call unto me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things."

1 John 5:13-15 "I have written this to you who believe in the Son of God so that you may know you have eternal life. And we are sure of this that He will listen to us whenever we ask Him for anything in line with His will. And if we really know He is listening when we talk to Him and make our requests, then, we can be sure He will answer."

Ephesians 3:20 "Now glory be to God who by His mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of - infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts or hopes."

What about the Lord's model Prayer?

Matthew 6:9-13 "Our Father in heaven, we honour Your holy name. We ask that Your kingdom will come soon. May Your will be done here in earth, just as it is in Heaven. Give us our food again today, as usual, and forgive us our sins, just as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us. Don't allow us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Amen."

This is a model prayer Jesus taught it to His disciples as an illustration.

If you read it carefully you will see it shows you how to approach God.

He IS YOUR FATHER. This is all because of Calvary.

HE IS IN HEAVEN. Because He is sovereign and is the Creator of the whole universe.

HONOUR HIS HOLY NAME. He is your provider, your healer, your righteousness, your peace. Learn what all His Names and character means to you.

YOUR KINGDOM COME, YOUR WILL BE DONE IN EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. Ask Him to help you reach others with the gospel.

GIVE US OUR FOOD AGAIN TODAY. Thank Him; He is our total source, everything we have comes from Him. Pray every day!

FORGIVE US OUR SINS. Accept His free forgiveness of sins and forgive others who wrong you.

DON'T ALLOW US INTO TEMPTATION. Temptation is not a sin, it's when you yield to it and satisfy it’s calling on you, that it becomes a problem. Yield not to temptation!

DELIVER US FROM THE EVIL ONE. God can strengthen you on a daily basis, as you yield to Him not the evil one. He has made the way of escape, and cleansing and forgiveness.

Although this is commonly called The Lord's Prayer, His prayer for you and me is found in John 17, why not go there and read that passage today and see what He prayed for you!

Remember to talk with God daily, this should be a daily habit that becomes a lifestyle.
