Matthew 24:38-39 "For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be."

Matt 24:37-39 The Passion Translation "For it will be exactly like it was in the days of Noah when the Son of Man appears. Before the flood, people lived their lives eating, drinking, marrying, and having children. They didn't realise the end was near until Noah entered the ark, and then suddenly, the flood came and took them all away in judgement. It will happen the same way when the Son of Man appears."

Jesus is prophesying that when He returns it will be just as in Noah's day, people will be preoccupied with the temporary affairs of this life, their normal, every day eating sleeping, going to work, making money lifestyle; instead of pursuing eternal spiritual truths. In these last days before His return, there are plenty of signs to show that the time is drawing near, almost daily we hear of earthquakes, fire, flood, hurricanes, conflict in the Middle East, the list goes on. As Christians we should be heeding these signs and warning others of the imminent return of our Saviour.  Preoccupation with the affairs of this life can dull us to spiritual realities. The Lord kindly, but seriously, points out the urgent need to be ready for His return. In the same way that a thief comes when people are the least prepared, so our Lord will return in a time when people are not looking for, or expecting Him.

This is not because our Lord desires to surprise us and see how many He can catch unprepared. On the contrary, He is urging us to be watchful so that we will be going about His business, preparing ourselves and others around us for His return. Jesus gave us the signs of the end times to help us be ready. He is simply prophesying that there will be a condition of apathy in the latter days that will tend to lull even the faithful to sleep if they don't take heed of His words.

Matthew 24:44 TPT "So always be ready, alert and prepared, because at an hour when you're not expecting Him, the Son of Man will come."

Believers will not be assembled on a mountaintop somewhere waiting for the Lord's return. We will still be going about our daily routines.

In Luke the Lord told us, the Church, in chapter 19 verse 13 to "Occupy till I come."

We should be ready for the Lord to come back at any moment, yet working for His kingdom business as if His return was still far off.

What is the Lord's business?

Matthew 25:34-36 and 40 TPT "...Come and experience the full inheritance of the kingdom realm that has been destined for you from before the foundation of the world! For when you saw me hungry, you fed me. When you found me thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I had no place to stay, you invited me in, and when I was poorly clothed, you covered me. When I was sick, you tenderly cared for me, and when I was in prison you visited me...Don't you know? when you cared for one of the least important of these my little ones, my true brothers and sisters, you demonstrated love for me."
