Luke 8:43-48 A woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. "Who touched me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you." But Jesus said,
"Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.’ Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and…told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace."
I want you to notice three important things in this story:
- She did something she’d never done before. She decided to try Jesus. That’s a wise move! Faith means stepping into the unknown and the untried, finding God’s grace at work in unexpected ways. Medical science had failed her and cost her everything she had. She heard about this itinerant preacher who was doing miracles, it was her last chance.
- She recognized her moment. She knew that Jesus was visiting her town, and might not be back. There are some God-moments in life when we’ve got to overcome our fear and move out in faith. If we don’t, we’ll miss the opportunity and it may not come our way again.
- She also opened the door for others. Up until this time, no one in Scripture had been healed by touching Jesus’ garment. So her act of faith opened the door for others; she led the way to receive from Jesus that others had not even contemplated.
Matthew 14:35-36 People brought all their sick to him and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
God’s looking for people who are willing to break with their religious traditions. When He finds them, He uses them to open doors and new dimensions of His power, so that others might be blessed and made whole.
